Vietnam’s Plywood Industry Growth in 2024

1.

Impressive Production Growth in 2024

Vietnam’s plywood industry continues to experience solid growth, with production increasing by an estimated 12% in 2024 compared to the previous year. According to the Industrial Production Index, plywood, veneer, and laminated wood production saw significant improvement. Vietnamese manufacturers have made considerable investments in modern technology and expanded production capacities to meet growing demand. This is reflected in both domestic and international consumption levels.

The growth is driven by the following factors:

  • Investment in technology: Vietnamese plywood companies are constantly improving their production processes by adopting new technologies that reduce costs and optimize product quality.
  • Expansion of production capacity: Many factories have scaled up their production to meet high demand from key export markets, particularly from North America and Europe.

2.

Strong Export Growth

In 2024, Vietnam’s plywood exports reached over USD 1.7 billion, marking a 6% increase from 2023. High-quality plywood products such as film-faced plywood and LVL continue to dominate export orders.

Key export markets include:

  • United States: Accounting for nearly 40% of total export value, the United States remains the largest and most stable market for Vietnam’s plywood.
  • Japan and South Korea: These countries also contribute significantly to export value due to their high demand for plywood in the construction and furniture industries.
  • Europe: A fast-growing region, especially countries like Germany, France, and the UK.

The strong performance in these export markets helps sustain the plywood industry’s steady growth. Furthermore, products with FSC certification are increasingly in demand in developed markets, presenting significant opportunities for local manufacturers.

Domestic Market and Challenges in 2024

While Vietnam’s plywood exports show strong growth, the domestic market experienced a slight decline. The total value of the domestic plywood market decreased by 3.9% compared to 2023, reaching USD 618 million. This may be due to increased competition from imported products and a softening demand within the domestic construction sector.

Nevertheless, the Vietnamese plywood industry maintains stability thanks to ongoing demand in sectors such as furniture and construction. Additionally, the raw wood market and deep-processed products remain relatively stable.

Outlook and Future Prospects

Vietnam’s plywood industry aims to achieve exports between USD 1.3 billion and 1.4 billion by 2025. Value-added products such as film-faced plywood, LVL, and FSC-certified goods will continue to play a central role in export strategies.

However, the industry will face several challenges moving forward, including:

  • Raw material price fluctuations: Wood prices and other production materials may be affected by global market dynamics, especially supply from major timber-exporting countries.
  • Competition from other countries: Countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, and China also produce plywood at lower costs, creating competitive pressure for Vietnam’s manufacturers.
  • Sustainability requirements: Stricter regulations from export markets demand improvements in product quality and sustainability practices.

Nevertheless, with continued investments in technology, product quality, and export strategies, Vietnam’s plywood industry is expected to maintain its sustainable growth trajectory and capture a larger share of international markets.
