Cost-Effective Face Veneer Options for LVL: Using Core Veneers Instead of Decorative Layers

Discover how TT&H uses core veneers like pine, acacia, and mixed hardwood as face layers in LVL production—saving cost while ensuring structural strength and sustainability.

⸻

Why Core Veneers Are a Smart Choice for LVL Face Layers

In conventional Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) production, manufacturers often use thin, imported decorative face veneers such as Okoume, Bintangor, or Red Canarium to enhance the panel’s appearance. While these materials look good, they do little to improve strength or performance—and add to the cost.

At TT&H Plywood, we take a practical and efficient approach. Instead of decorative layers, we use core veneers like pine, acacia (keo), and mixed hardwood (bồ đề, local species) directly as face veneers. This method not only cuts costs but also ensures consistent structural quality, making our LVL ideal for construction, packaging, and industrial use.

Main Types of Core Veneers Used as LVL Face Veneers

1. Pine Veneer

• Origin: Plantation-grown Radiata or local pine species.

• Characteristics: Light color, smooth grain, soft texture.

• Advantages: Excellent bonding surface, stable under heat and pressure, and provides a clean appearance when sanded.

2. Mixed Hardwood Veneer (e.g., Bồ Đề)

• Origin: Sourced from various fast-growing hardwoods in Vietnam.

• Characteristics: Moderate density, color varies from light to medium brown.

• Advantages: Economical, easily available, and functional for non-visible structural applications.

3. Acacia Veneer (Keo)

• Origin: Plantation wood from Vietnam and Southeast Asia.

• Characteristics: Medium to high density, tough fiber, slightly darker grain.

• Advantages: Strong and durable, resists warping and splitting, ideal for heavy-duty and moisture-prone environments.

Why TT&H Uses Core Veneers as Face Layers

• Cost Efficiency: Eliminates the need for imported decorative veneers.

• Strength Consistency: Ensures even density and bonding throughout the panel.

• Sustainability: Maximizes timber usage from local plantations.

• Custom Finishing: Panels can still be sanded, laminated, or coated as needed.

This practical method meets the technical demands of LVL applications in construction, scaffolding, pallets, and furniture frames, where strength and cost matter more than surface aesthetics.
